LIHUE Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami has signed an eighth supplementary emergency proclamation for the County of Kauai, and has amended the emergency rule and order as it applies to legal Transient Vacation Rentals in the Lumahai, Wainiha, and Haena area.
LIHUE — Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami has signed an eighth supplementary emergency proclamation for the County of Kauai, and has amended the emergency rule and order as it applies to legal Transient Vacation Rentals in the Lumahai, Wainiha, and Ha‘ena area.
“As of May 1, we will allow legal TVRs to operate with the understanding that all parks and beaches in Ha‘ena remain closed and off limits,” Kawakami said. “We will continue to work with our government partners and the community during this time of transition.”
The county will be working with permitted TVR owners to ensure that their guests receive temporary vehicle placards into the Wainiha area, and further reminds all residents and visitors of the restrictions that remain in place.
Until the highway reopens during the week of May 20, access into the Lumahai-Wainiha-Ha‘ena area will continue to be restricted.
What a crock…. tourists are now allowed to be up there if they rent a place while the rest of the island still can’t go because the whiny NIMBYs looking for any excuse to to keep their slice of paradise private. The feds never should have given 77 million. How about a deal with Wainiha people, you can’t use our roads if we can’t use yours.
So let me get this straight………the road is in good enough condition for the tourists to use to get to their vacation rentals but is dangerous for everyone else??? You can’t have it both ways, Mr. Mayor, either the road is dangerous or it isn’t!!

non-residents will simply be advised that parking is limited and certain parking areas closed off.
This announcement is merely clarifying that vacation renters are allowed up here, too (subject to the same limited parking, etc).

This is hysterical…I remember all the Haole’s on their boats bringing Aunties cigarettes, water and beers by da thousands for months and then they wanted rain boots and all kind other stuff for free. We donated so many items, paid for our gas and never ask for anything in return. We felt rewarded to help. Now Auntie see me in town, not even say hello. And they tell me I am not allowed to walk their beach and they gonna lay boulders and logs on the road and F*#@ up some tourist for visiting their homeland. Ungrateful simpletons…thats what I say. I was their best friend when I had cartons Marlboro lights…

Da Shadow… “The road is open to all” not true…you need a placard and can only get one if staying in a valid TVR with a rental contract to prove. You know there are many illegal rentals so those folks are screwed…whatever, serves them right. anyone who lives in Hanalei can not go through. Our beaches are jam packed. Kalihiwai packed. Secrets packed all Winter. So Haena residents never want to see the road open to tourist to have beaches to themselves but do not care if all other beaches are packed. Except when they want to surf Blackpot. Then they complain about parking.
