WAILUKU — The top legal official in a Hawaii county has resigned amid protests over his arrest on a domestic abuse charge.
Maui County Department of Corporation Counsel Patrick Wong held a press conference Tuesday to announce his resignation without providing a reason.
Reports say the announcement came a little more than a month since Wong was charged in Wailuku with abuse of a household member.
The state Attorney General’s office says it decided to drop the charge against Wong earlier this month.
News outlets say Wong resigned a day after protesters confronted Maui County Mayor Mike Victorino and demanded he fire Wong.
Victorino says he accepted Wong’s resignation after reviewing the results of the police investigation that led the attorney general’s office to decline prosecution.
