PRINCEVILLE – Kauai police report that a male visitor died while snorkeling in waters off Puu Poa Beach in Princeville on Monday morning.
PRINCEVILLE – Kauai police report that a male visitor died while snorkeling in waters off Pu‘u Poa Beach in Princeville on Monday morning.
He has been identified as Joseph Nesselroth, 64, of Colorado.
Shortly after 10:30 a.m., Hanalei firefighters were notified of an unresponsive snorkeler being brought to shore on Pu‘u Poa Beach.
According to a preliminary investigation, the man was snorkeling with his fiancé and a tour group when he became distressed about 20 yards from shore. His fiancé called out for help and bystanders nearby went into the water to respond. They brought the unresponsive man to shore, where they began administering CPR.
Once on scene, firefighters took over the effort but attempts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful. Responding medics transported Nesselroth to Mahelona Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
However, foul play is not suspected.
Volunteers from Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, assisted the man’s family.
Wait a second, what’s going on here? Hasn’t there been at least 2 drownings per week on this island since the year began. Where are our life guards? What are these slackers doing besides checking their timesheets and texting babes?
Mina that is a mean, uncalled for response to a drowning. Our lifeguards do a remarkable job of saving people and they do not deserve this kind of talk. Pua Poa is an unguarded area and people do choose to swim and snorkel in unsafe areas. He was an older person from out of state and wonder what type of snorkel equipment he was using. Please apologize for your nasty comment.
Mina: What a mean and wrong comment to make about our lifeguards. They are always on guard and save many people. This older, out of state man chose to swim at an unguarded beach. He appeared to have a medical emergency and the life guards had to travel to reach him. You owe an apology to the relatives of this deceased man!
Kauai’s lifeguards are far from slackers; they provide excellent service when called upon to render aid.
also, no lifeguards are posted at Pu’u Poa, Hideaways, etc. The nearest lifeguard is at Anini or Hanalei Bay.
We are all responsible for our own well-being, but sometimes, accidents happen.
