LIHUE — Drop by the state Department of Health Kauai District Health Office on Umi Street from Monday to Friday to learn about what public health officials do and about different topics facing the community.
Part of the nationwide Public Health Week Open House, Kauai’s first annual week of talk story sessions will run from 10 a.m. through noon each day.
Monday, the week kicks off with a talk story session on healthy communities. Topics include keeping food safe, helping keiki grow and keeping them healthy at school, and living with a mental illness.
Tuesday, violence prevention is the topic of conversation, where information will be presented on how to protect vulnerable residents from harm and how to prevent child abuse, domestic violence and suicide.
On Wednesday, the topic of conversation is rats, mosquitoes and other aspects of rural living. Also available will be information on finding healthcare services.
Thursday, the topic is technology and public health. Learn about getting birth and death certificates, using telehealth, tracking diseases, lab results and vaccines, and improving emergency preparedness with technology.
Friday wraps up the week with a talk story session on climate change. Learn about planning for climate change and health, more severe floods and hurricanes, new diseases, clean water threats and wastewater challenges.
Each session is free and open to the public.
