NAWILIWILI — At 4:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon, the Kauai Police Department, along with the Kauai Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard, responded to a report of a body found floating in waters near the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor.
The victim has been identified as Evan Forsnes, 53, of Spokane, Wash.
An American Medical Response ambulance responded, along with two KFD engines and three KPD squad cars, and began performing CPR on Forsnes
According to a preliminary report, Forsnes had been swimming off Kalapaki Bay.
The man’s wife was on scene as emergency personnel transported Forsnes from the harbor to the emergency room at Wilcox Medical Center after unsuccessful recitation attempts at the harbor.
According to local witnesses on the scene, the event unfolded rapidly.
“There was a bunch of boats that went out and then there was an alarm that went off. Somebody called it in,” said one resident standing near the scene. “That was about it.”
A family that lives nearby came to see what was going on as the unresponsive man was being taken to Wilcox.
“It’s a dangerous place,” said Rick, a Nawiliwili resident said. “We heard their sirens, we live right over there. We didn’t know what was going on, so we came down to see what happened.”
