HONOLULU — A new report from Hawaii’s largest homeless service provider says the number of people travelling to Oahu and then becoming homeless is growing.
Hawaii News Now reported Friday that the Institute for Human Services says 209 people from across the mainland showed up at one of its shelters last year looking for help. That’s up from 165 people in 2017.
The vast majority were single men, many of whom had been on the island less than three months.
Spokesman Kimo Carvalho says about 10 percent of the state’s homeless population recently traveled to Hawaii.
The institute developed a relocation program for homeless to return to their home states. Donations from Hawaii’s tourism industry are used to cover half the airfare while the homeless person is responsible the rest.

Every County in Hawaii needs to start paying attention to the invasion of homelessness migrating from the mainland. For years Hawaii seems enamored with what California public and social policies are. I realize most don’t pay to much attention to what happens on the mainland. Perhaps Senator Mazie Hirono should pay attention to what is happening in Hawaii and focus her attention on leading vs being a follower. Social welfare leads to more social welfare, just look at communities in California. What you will find is a welcome to California sign blinking every day for transient homeless to migrate to California.
The first time any law in Hawaii is broken a one way ticket back to the mainland should be provided after time served. With Southwest to be assured to shuttle more of these homeless onto the shores of Hawaii perhaps SW might provide a negotiated fare for the State to send them back.
A lot of people from the mainland think they can come to Hawaii and live on the “Aloha.” Until they find out that Aloha is myth.

“Aloha” is for the tourists. Begins and ends there.
Migrants come to the US for a better life, and there is no better life than living in Hawaii. I support a Court order halting any efforts to curtail or deport dreamers showing up on Hawaiian soil.
I support a law prohibiting bigots writing off topic comments to local newspapers.
That’s ridiculous…The homeless aren’t going to pay half the share for a ticket home…Guess what? They are staying and remaining homeless…

Hawaii has been ruined by the homeless. I have no desire to ever visit there again.
