KILAUEA — A man died in waters off Kauapea Beach in Kilauea Wednesday afternoon.
He was identified as 31-year-old Jonathan Seim of Washington state.
Shortly before 2:30 p.m., Seim went swimming off Kauapea Beach, also known as Secret Beach, when he became distressed and yelled for help. Bystanders entered the water and found him face down roughly 20 feet from the shoreline. They brought the unresponsive man to shore and began administering CPR.
Hanalei firefighters, lifeguards from the north roving patrol and medics were dispatched to the scene and took over resuscitation efforts, but the man could not be revived, according to a county press release.
Seim was transported to Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of his death, but foul play is not suspected.
