Akira Williams breaks records at KIF swimming championships

PUHI — Kauai High School swimmer Akira Williams set the pace for 11 individual qualifying swims and eight relay team qualifying swims Saturday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation championship meet at the YMCA pool.

Equipped with new electronic timing systems, Akira broke KIF records in two events — the 50 yard freestyle, and the 100 yard freestyle — where he set records by touching the wall at 21.36 seconds in the 50-, and 46.78 seconds in the 100-yard events. Akira is also part of the Red Raiders’ 200 Yard Medley Relay, and 400 Yard Freestyle Relay teams, both of whom finished in first place.

Red Raider swimmer Hayley Kaeo, and Kapaa swimmer Maddie Hoesel set the pace for the women, both swimmer making two individual qualifying swims apiece as well as swimming on the qualifying relay teams.

The qualifying KIF swimmers and relay teams will next participate in the K. Mark Takai Hawaii High School Athletic Association swimming and diving championships that will contest on Feb. 8 and 9 at the Central Oahu Regional Park aquatic facility.
