WAILUA — The stage is set for the Kauai Interscholastic Federation championship regatta following the results of Saturday’s regatta that was delayed due to the traffic following an early morning auto accident.
Kauai High School junior varsity girls took control of its race by nearly four seconds over the Kapaa A team, crossing the line on a paddle of 4 minutes, 22.88 seconds. The win puts the JV Raider girls way out front with 23 points, overall. They are challenged by the Kapaa JV Girls at 17 points, and Waimea with four points.
The Kapaa junior varsity boys command the standings with 23 points overall following its first place finish where the JV Warriors broke the four-minute mark on a 3:58.63 run, challenged by Waimea crossing at 4:01.99 and the Kauai team at 4:15.83.
The Warriors’ junior varsity Mixed team picked up a win by less than three ticks over Kauai’s A team, Saturday, crossing the line on a 4:12.89 run over Kauai’s 4:15.19. The victory moves Kapaa to a first overall standing at 24 points, challenged by Kauai’s 18 points. Waimea, finishing third at 4:25.00, sits at 10 points followed by Island School at three points.
Kapaa varsity girls create an interesting showdown situation after winning its Saturday run (4:15.10) over the Red Raider girls who stroked in on a 4:19.92 run. The Kapaa win puts the Warrior wahine up with 20 points, but strongly challenged by Kauai who sits a point back with 19 points. The Menehune are third with 11 points followed by Island School with five points.
Waimea, taking a strong win in the varsity boys division on a 3:49.74 final run, pulls to a 19-point tie with Kauai High School who finished the Saturday regatta in second with a 3:52.38 paddle. Kapaa, taking third place in the varsity boys final on a 3:54.97 run, sits with 11 points followed by Island School at five points.
The Menehune, fighting through the traffic snarl that delayed the regatta, held off the Kapaa varsity Mixed team by a mere .27 second in the finals of that race after earlier dropping to the Island School team by nearly eight seconds in the preliminary heats.
With the Saturday win, Waimea holds the overall points standings at 21 points followed by Kauai whose Mixed team failed to advance to the final race, Saturday. Kauai sits with 14 points followed by Kapaa at 11 points, and Island School at nine points.
The first paddlers hit the water at 9 a.m. when the double-points KIF paddling championships unfold, Saturday at the Wailua River.
