HONOLULU — Officials in an Oahu neighborhood say the city mistakenly covered up a crosswalk near the site where an 86-year-old pedestrian was hit by a car.
Police say Maqbul ur-Rahman died after he was hit by a 24-year-old driver while crossing Hawaii Kai Drive on Monday.
Police Sgt. Nathan Hee tells the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that the 86-year-old was not in a marked crosswalk, noting the closest one was more than 200 feet (61 meters) away.
Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board member Greg Knudsen says there would have been “at least a chance that he would have used it” had the former crosswalk still been in place.
State Rep. Gene Ward wrote Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell on Tuesday asking for the crosswalk to be reinstated.
A city spokesman declined to comment.
