This is the last weekend to donate

LIHUE — The Toys for Tots drive is on its last leg, with Saturday and Sunday being the last weekend the drive will be ongoing.

“Mahalo to the donors and volunteers for Toys for Tots,” said Jim Jung, chaplain of the Marine Corps League, which hosts the Toys for Tots program annually.

Every weekend, from Thanksgiving to Christmas, volunteers are at the front of the Lihue Walmart, greeting shoppers. Those shoppers donate toys to the MCL bins, which are picked up at the end of the day by The Salvation Army. Money donations are also accepted.

Then, The Salvation Army distributes the toys according to requests from various groups around the island to help out local families.

“Last Saturday a well known Kauai celebrity donated a new child’s bike with training wheels,” Jung said.

Jung continued: “While doing so he shared a sad story of his own childhood. He came from a poor family and received a basketball for Christmas. His delight quickly turned to disappointment when the ball didn’t bounce. Perhaps, this and other reasons inspired his generosity.”

That community member was Ron Wiley and he’ll be getting a brand new basketball from the Marine Corps — according to the policy of caring for comrades.

“Go have some fun shooting baskets, Ron Wiley,” Jung said.
