Yes the victim in the latest accident on Kaumualii Highway in Lawai may not have been in a crosswalk. However if there were flashing lights with signs on both(eastbound and westbound) side of the highway warning drivers that a pedestrian crosswalk up ahead. The driver may have been more alert. Whether pedestrians are in a crosswalk or not!
Then on another thought, “there isn’t enough lighting in that area.” We on Kauai live in the dark. With all the modern technologies today. We could light up our road/highways with low beam solar lights. Enough to see what’s in/on the path up ahead of our driving lanes and shoulders.

An unfortunate and tragic situation near the Lawai 7-11 store. However, one of the best qualities of Kauai is it’s rural ambiance. Do we really want more urbanization like never ending street lights? And, more importantly, how do we pay for them when we can’t even keep our roads in decent shape. There are more important uses for infrastructure monies. Use common sense, slow down, cross in crosswalks, and don’t assume drivers see you.
We don’t need to light up the entire island because some people end up in the road. Keep Kauai rural outside of city limits. What happened in Lawai had nothing to do with there not being a street light. People get killed daily in cities with lights every 40 feet.
So…James & tunataxi . What you are saying is, “it doesn’t matter if another one bites the dust!”
You wouldn’t want to find ways to solve the problem.
Ho I’m saying it’s a waste of resources and people should stay out of the road unless it’s safe to cross
I’m guessing that this tragedy may have been partially caused by the vision of the driver that hit the pedestrian being blinded by headlights of oncoming traffic. More than likely a vehicle with those new extra bright white lights that very likely do not comply with our existing vehicle codes. Unfortunately, our safety checks no longer include a test for proper alignment of headlights nor compliance of the brightness.

Night walkers should be wearing those fluorescent yellow vests with the striped silver reflector straps. Those are typical work clothes even by day with road crews and stand out at night like NEON NIGHT MARCHERS…and they stand out better at night when it is completely dark with oncoming cars bouncing their headlights off of them.
Night Marchers need to be properly suited up for the task, which is to stay alive.
It seems more humans get run over than dogs; making dogs smarter than humans. For example there is a
Dare Devil on island that rides a bike with a chicken on the handle bars, he rides a bike on the sidewalks and crosses intersections and business entrances and exits like he is dumber than dogs and apparently chickens both, we see him daily almost get obliviously hit by cars in the daytime and he just keep driving in front of moving vehicles trying to make their way in and out of traffic. Airhead on Autism…!
The score one day will be: Human = Zero, Chicken = 1…sounds like an IQ Test of the Species…just like when the island leads someone to the airport for a permanent departure…and another chicken is born and becomes an island citizen.
