Members of local martial arts school Kims Academy Island School TaeKwonDo competed at the Maui Open Taekwondo Championship last weekend at the Lahaina Civic Center.
“This is their 14th year hosting it,” said Jack Markman, K.A.I.S. master instructor. “People came from India this year. People come from all over.”
Nine students from K.A.I.S. competed last Saturday. The youngest was 6, and the eldest was 16.
The school overall took home 15 medals — eight golds, five silvers and two bronzes.
The students took part in three competitions: forms, sparring and board breaking.
“They do three tournament classes a week, only for those students that train for tournaments,” Markman said. “Great dedication. It was our third tournament. (We competed) on Maui last year and Oahu earlier this year. They improve each time. I’m really proud of their achievements, their skill and their positive energy that they share with the other students.”
The school next plans to compete at another tournament on Oahu in March.
