LIHUE — HA Coffee just celebrated its five-year anniversary, and instead of hosting a party, they’re taking on a new coworking space venture — Kuleana.work. It’s a natural next step for a location consistently filled with community members working, meeting, and gathering at the community-embedded coffee shop.
“A lot of people are asking us what a coworking space is,” says Char Ravelo, one of the founders of the project and the executive director of Leadership Kauai. “Kuleana.work is not just an office, lounge, and coffee shop, it is an incubator for ideas, collaboration and innovation, as well as an event location all rolled into one.”
Entrepreneurship isn’t a new model for Kauai. According to the Small Business Development Center, about 25 percent of the island’s working adult population is involved in small business ventures.
“This coworking space is a global platform to help grow andbuild our next leaders and businesses for Kauai’s future,” continues Ravelo. “In today’s world of working silos, this very unique environment advocates forcommunity, collaboration, openness,sustainability/regenerative, and inclusiveness. These five core values of Kuleana.work will help individuals thrive.”
The co-working space itself hosts desks, meeting and event spaces, printers/scanners, whiteboards, spare computer monitors, Wi-Fi, a kitchen, storage lockers, and cozy places to sit with early-to-late access for members and drop-ins. They’ll also provide business address and mail service, online community access, and membership discounts.
“Collaboration is a very powerful tool for problem solving and creating,” says Carl Lozar, founder of Kauai Makerspace. “KMS is excited to bring its community to Kuleana.work and help build this important resource.”
Kuleana.work has five different membership models depending on one’s level of use. A grand opening is scheduled in January.
