LIHUE — In one of the last remaining duties of being the mayor, Bernard Carvalho Jr. presented $500,000 of state grants Friday to six nonprofits for work they are doing for flood recovery on the North Shore.
LIHUE — In one of the last remaining duties of being the mayor, Bernard Carvalho Jr. presented $500,000 of state grants Friday to six nonprofits for work they are doing for flood recovery on the North Shore.
“The nonprofits are being given grant funding to enable them to complete the much-needed work, and to provide much-needed services to those affected by the devastating floods in April,” Carvalho said.
• Hale Halawai was the recipient of $125,000 for its work on the Flood Project Continuation-Wainiha which is in partnership with the Wainiha-Haena community to prepare the grounds of the Wainiha Cultural Beach Park for stewardship and community engagement.
• Child and Family Service received $111,738 for funding of services that help survivors heal and rebuild their lives through case management, coordination of services, counseling, and collaboration with other community-based organizations.
• The National Tropical Botanical Garden received $92,054 for the funding of Limahuli garage road repairs and improvements to the access road, facilitating recovery for the Limahuli Garden and Preserve.
• The Hanalei Watershed Hui received $64,000 to fund hazard mitigation for flood areas on the North Shore of Kauai, including updating the Hanalei to Haena Community Disaster Plan and the purchase of emergency staging area supplies.
• Malama Kauai was the recipient of $57,208 for the funding of the Meaai on Wheels program that continues to provide meals and assist vulnerable and less mobile individuals and families in the Wainiha-Haena area.
• The YMCA of Kauai received $50,000 for repair of Camp Naue. The project will address damages sustained while relief efforts were operating from the camp.
