From the opening lilting train riders to the final crecendo, “The Music Man Kids” by Meredith Wilson is the saga of a traveling salesman, Harold Hill, and his escapades in River City, Iowa.
Under the direction of Laine Griffith, Kalaheo School music director, students in the Kalaheo School Sunshine Express present the musical production Friday through Sunday in the school cafeteria.
The curtain rises at 7 p.m. today and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Guests are encouraged to arrive early for parking. There will be a food concession available. Guests might also bring pillows to sit on.
Tickets are available at the door. Admission is $1 for children from age 2 through grade 5, and $5 for everyone else grade 6 and above.
“This is a wonderful performance,” said Melissa Gregory, a parent coordinator. “The show is wonderful, and we are lucky to have Mr. Griffith at Kalaheo School. He has a way of getting the best out of all the students.”
Hill arrives in River City, and after seeing the trouble created by a pool table, runs into Marian, the town librarian.
“The best part of this performance is the music,” Gregory said. “There are a lot of tunes people are familiar with, like ‘76 Trombones,’ ‘Goodnight My Someone,’ and ‘Gary, Indiana.’ Everyone will have fun with this.”
What will happen to Harold Hill, the town’s band, and Marian the librarian? Guests will have to see the production to find out.
Griffith and the Kalaheo Sunshine Express have taken the show on the road already, to Wilcox Day Health Care Center, Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, and previewed of some of the music during the 25th Kauai Christmas Parade at Kukui Grove Center last weekend.
