“This most recent contamination outbreak underscores the importance of all industry members throughout the supply chain to follow a labeling program for that produce,” said Scott Enright, chairperson of the Hawaii Board of Agriculture.
The FDA said Monday the romaine linked to the E. coli outbreak appears to be from California’s Central Coast region. It said romaine from elsewhere should soon be labeled with harvest dates and regions, so people know it’s OK to eat.
“Produce labeled with grower information and harvest date will help communicate to consumers that produce being re-introduced into retail and foodservice markets is safe to consume,” Enright said.
Locally-grown romaine was not implicated in the outbreak.
