There are many young people on Kauai who face serious challenges and would welcome a Merry Christmas with help from the community.
Elizabeth is a six-year-old girl who has gone through years of traumatic events. She has autism, ADHD and other complication. Despite these difficulties, she is an energetic girl who loves to run, be outdoors and be around others.
She would love help with a trampoline to burn off some of her energy and to give her another activity to do outside rather than being indoors and watching television.
Jason is 18 years old with cerebral palsy and is bound to a wheelchair. He lives with his single mother who struggles to provide financially with no family support.
Jason enjoys being in the water, playing basketball, making music and going to church. He is a friendly and funny young man who would be ecstatic to have help with some new furniture and decorations for his room.
These are just a few of the people The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund hopes to help this year. About 400 families, through different social service agencies, filled out applications seeking assistance from The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund during the holidays. They count on this fund, which was established in the early 1980s.
In the past two years, the fund has raised more than $50,000.
Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share daily stories about people (we don’t use their real names) facing challenges and who would appreciate a little help.
Only monetary donations are accepted. Checks, payable to Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI 96766. For further information, call Dimples Kano at 822-4517.
