ANAHOLA — A three-car crash on Wednesday night resulted in the temporary closure of Kuhio Highway between Anahola and Kealia, and the arrest of an Anahola woman.
No major injuries were reported.
The incident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. According to a preliminary investigation, a northbound Honda SUV was driving along the shoulder of the southbound lane on Kuhio Highway, near mile marker 12, when it struck an oncoming Subaru SUV. The impact subsequently caused a southbound Mazda pickup truck to crash into the Subaru.
The crash caused major damages to all three vehicles.
The driver of the Honda, 19-year-old Carmen Rodarte of Anahola, did not report any injuries and was arrested at the scene for suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. She was taken into custody and released after posting $750 in bail.
The male driver of the Subaru, age 45, of Oahu, reported no injuries. The 85-year-old driver of the pickup truck, and his 78-year-old female passenger, both of Anahola, also reported no major injuries. They were all checked by medics and released at the scene.
Police officers closed Kuhio Highway for about 40 minutes while the scene was investigated and cleared of debris.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Police… please stop completely shutting down the ONLY highway we have when there is a crash, especially when there are no life threatening injuries!!! Why can’t you all just keep one lane open and run the cars through alternating the directions every few minutes or so? It’s not that hard!
Sue, take the police exam an join the force, KPD needs more citizens like you that is well versed in investigations.
Yea, ……like I guess you never heard of an “investigation” after an accident. Kind of hard to do when traffic is going both ways.
The reason the roadway is closed after a crash is that a thorough investigation is conducted. Insurance companies will not pay until all other parties are sued and the investigation provides legal documents that are used as evidence. Blame the insurance industry for all the huhu as they pretty much get their way when it comes to legislation. Or talk to the legislature for failing to stand up to an industry that is essentially legalized gambling where we pay to hedge the hourse’s bet that nothing will happen that will result in a claim.
That’s really inappropriate to post the girl’s photo. Nobody was hurt. I’ve never seen TGI stoop this low before. Terrible. There have been fatal crashes recently here where the person responsible’s ID was protected by TGI staff. Why is that?
Bluedream, did you miss the part of her being arrested? None of this would have happened if she didn’t get behind the wheel when intoxicated. I think GI did a good job and posted her picture to at least deter other idiots that driving intoxicated.
I guess some of you don’t know how to read, either.
I said to leave one lane open and alternate. They could still investigate. They do it like this all over the world. Why not here? You have no idea what my background is……. I am actually an investigator, retired! They just aren’t doing it properly here. In the case of deaths, yes, close the roads.
As Numilalocal says, don’t let the insurance companies dictate how you run your investigation. Do it because you want to do it right, not because you have to tick boxes the big companies tell you must be fillied in.
Agreed! DUI’s are a very common occurrence, unfortunately, but this girl is being vilified. Yes, she messed up but there have been bigger cases with worse injuries where the picture is never posted. Great job, TGI. This is why no one supports your crap publication.
