KAPAA — A blessing was held on Tuesday at the Kapaa bus stop near the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex to mark construction of the fourth phase of the islandwide bus stop passenger shelter project.
“We are very excited for the fourth phase of the bus shelter project, as it has been one of our administration’s top priorities to shelter all of our bus stops islandwide,” said Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho Jr. “We are incredibly grateful to our state legislators, councilmembers, and the many volunteers and organizations for their support of these bus shelters.”
Each of the nine new shelter locations islandwide will include bike racks, trash receptacles and photovoltaic lighting, which offer a safe, comfortable and more pleasant waiting area for transit riders, Carvalho said.
Alaea Construction is the contractor for this phase of the project.
The state Legislature allocated $1.5 million in 2015 to fund the third and final phase of construction, and the county aims to shelter 60 bus stops total as part of Carvalho’s Holo Holo 2020 vision.
