Capt. Alfredo ‘Al’ Carbonel Jr.
Capt. Alfredo ‘Al’ Carbonel Jr.
After living an incredibly adventurous life, Capt. Alfredo “Al” Carbonel Jr., U.S. Air Force retired, joined our savior in heaven on Sept. 21, 2018.
He was the second eldest child born to the late Alfredo Itabac Carbonel and the late Aida Carbonel and had a humble-yet-fun-filled childhood in the Koloa sugar mill camp. A year after graduating from Kauai High School in 1973, he left the island and embarked on an amazing journey in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at several bases around the country and creating many lasting friendships throughout his time in the military. He served for 21 years before retiring in 1995 and returned to Kauai to begin his second career as a math teacher.
He was an avid reader, sports lover (partial to his alma maters University of Hawaii and University of Southern California), bizarre food enthusiast, globe-trotter, horticulturist, math prodigy, and part-time unofficial Air Force recruiter. Anyone who encountered him was likely subjected to his infamous jokes. He was an extrovert, full of humor and wit, and his infectious smile will forever remain embedded in our hearts.
He is survived by wife Ruth Kalili, daughters Kristie (Marlon) Cadiente, Alison Carbonel and Ashleigh (Shawn) Remigio, sons Alan (Katherine) Kalili and Aston Carbonel, sisters Lorraine (Michael) Schmidt and Arlene (Adolfo) Carbonel-Santana, brother Albert (Tina) Carbonel, granddaughters Khloe Miller and Ayva Remigio, grandson Ian Cadiente, granddog Ka‘imi, extended family, and a multitude of friends.
The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to Borthwick Kauai Mortuary and Kauai Veterans Cemetery for their assistance and accommodations during this difficult time.
