LIHUE — The Kauai Open, an event of the Hawaii Triple Crown of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, is scheduled for Oct. 14 at Kauai High School.
This is the seventh event of the Hawaii Triple Crown of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu’s 2018 tour.
“They’re going to see the best kids competitors from Kauai and the other island, and they’ll see the best adult competitors from Kauai,” said Romolo Barros, event coordinator. “There’s a lot of good schools in Kauai. So there’s a very, very good competitive spirit between them to see who’s the best school.”
Adults will compete in a single-elimination bracket, and children will compete in a double-elimination bracket.
Registration for competitors is open. Deadline to sign up is Oct. 11 at midnight.
Registration fees are $80 for adults and $60 for kids through Oct. 7. Fees will be $90 for adults and $70 for kids through Oct. 11.
The tournament will also accept walk-in registrations on-site with an additional late fee.
Weigh-ins will begin 8:30 a.m. the day of the event. Competition is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
Tickets will be sold at the door for $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Children 5 years old and younger are free of charge.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to nonprofit Project Hawaii.
“Their only goal and focus is to help the homeless kids in the state of Hawaii,” Barros said.
“It’s something that is really important to me, to help the homeless kids. We know in Hawaii, homeless is one of the biggest problems here. It’s the highest in the nation,” he added.
Following the Kauai Open, the tour continues on Kona with the Hawaii All Star Jiu-jitsu Invitational on Nov. 10, and the tour concludes at the Aloha State Championships on Nov. 18 at Farrington High School in Honolulu.
“Just come out and support all the great schools that they have in Kauai,” Barros said. “Jiu-jitsu is a really great art for kids, and it brings everybody together with a lot of respect. People in the jiu-jitsu community, even though they compete against each other, they have a lot of mutual respect. It’s something I think our community, or the world, it can use a lot more of that.”
