LIHUE — On Kauai, it’s been hot and humid lately, and that weather pattern is expected to persist until trade winds return on Sunday.
“The reason as to why it’s felt so hot and humid is because we’ve lost our trades,” said Melissa Dye, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
This, she said, is due to a low-pressure system that’s formed to the northwest of the island, combined with Hurricane Walaka down to the southwest, she said.
So, that 84 degrees on Wednesday felt hotter.
“What it’s doing is it’s giving us very light or variable winds, or southern winds. That’s pulling tropical moisture northward and that’s why it’s hot and humid,” Dye said.
Going into the end of the week, Dye said to expect much of the same weather, with a higher dew point and light winds.
But there is relief in sight. According to the NWS website, the high-pressure ride will build back in north of the state on Sunday, bringing the trade winds back.
