Kaila Sumida needed a new bicycle because she had outgrown the one she brought to the Wilcox Keiki Bike and Skateboard Safety Day.
“The one she had was too small,” said Bruce Orth of Kauai Cycle, who had a team doing free technical inspections with an eye geared toward safety. “Look at her. She won one of the bicycles that was being given away, and now she doesn’t need to go out to buy one.”
This is the fourth year Wilcox Health has partnered with organizations in hosting the safety day, where keiki received free, certified helmets along with skills lessons in bike and skateboard riding. Keiki were also eligible for giveaways of 19 bicycles and eight skateboards donated by community members. Partnering organizations offered hands-on education on various active lifestyle living and nutrition.
“This is important,” said Marissa Sandblom, whose son Sand Sandblom was fitted for a helmet by Dr. Carl Yu.
“He needs a helmet because he rides in a basket in the front of the bike,” Yu said. “I took his measurements, and there was a helmet that fit, so he gets a helmet too.”
