WAILUA — A Kauai man’s body was recovered Tuesday morning from the Sleeping Giant hiking trail in Wailua, after he apparently fell to his death Monday afternoon.
WAILUA — A Kauai man’s body was recovered Tuesday morning from the Sleeping Giant hiking trail in Wailua, after he apparently fell to his death Monday afternoon.
The man has been identified as Hunter Bilbo, 24, of Wailua Homesteads.
According to police, the victim was hiking the Nounou Trail, also known as Sleeping Giant, late Monday afternoon when he fell over the edge of a cliff and landed about 200 feet below.
Kapaa firefighters and Rescue 3 personnel aboard Air 1 were dispatched to the area around 3:30 p.m. After a nearly three-hour search, personnel in Air 1 spotted Bilbo’s body in heavy brush. However, nightfall and rough terrain forced recovery operations to conclude that evening.
On Tuesday morning rescuers resumed their search and hiked into the area, where they recovered Bilbo’s body about 11 a.m., a county press release said.
An autopsy is pending, however, police do not suspect foul play in the cause of Bilbo’s death.
Volunteers from Life’s Bridges, a non-profit grief counseling service, is assisting the victim’s family.
