Kauai Police Department Chief Darryl Perry is retiring.
He worked for 11 years and how big will his retirement be? Being Kauai County government, huge I suspect. Of course, it’s a “personnel matter” so it is secret.
While I assume Chief Perry is a good person, he’s been a terrible leader of one of Kauai’s most important government institutions. Around 1950, 80% of Americans respected government. Today, support is less than 20%. We’ve lost faith and trust in our government and the people who serve us.
Chief Perry added to the collapse in public trust. I’m a “privileged” White boy, haole, who’s been blessed to share the beauty of aloha on Kaua’i. When my wife and I found ourselves living in a “sh*thole” complex around a handful of criminals, we didn’t take our money and run, we stood and fought. My parents taught us to live kuleana — to act responsibly and courageously. They demanded we never run from bullies. Chief Perry and his team failed us. Criminals easily duped them. Under Chief Perry, KPD demonstrated NO Hawaiian Pride. His department is characterized by losers.
As a criminal justice practitioner, I learned to team with police, prosecutors and judges. Community policing promised a path to clean up our neighborhoods and streets. On Kaua’i, people prefer not to work with law enforcement. Our government is perceived to be a bigger problem than thugs and drug dealers. While there may be “honor among thieves,” few respect KPD.
This is sad. There are many dedicated professionals within KPD. They put their lives on the line for us each day, while their jobs are highly stressful and difficult. Many of us lost respect for KPD — due to the poor leadership by Chief Perry.
This Dark Chapter finally ends. Let’s pull together and demand a competent chief, as we work to return trust and respect to island law enforcement, and remove criminals from our streets. My history with Chief Perry and KPD:

You are insulting the Chief of Police after he has served our county for over 11years, he is “RETIRING” NOT RESIGNING
ABOUT TIME!! Now much money you and your “team” have cost tax payers in civil suits brought on by your poor management skills. Enjoy your retirement, and stay retired this time.
I hope the Police Commission will look outside of KPD for a new Chief so that the same mentality doesn’t continue to breed within KPD. Please, no more retired members of HPD for Kauai Chief
Aloha, please remember that unless you are willing to offer a solution or at least a possible improvement it is best to keep your grumble to yourself. Chief Perry has had a job most of us would never consider tackling …. if we even qualified for the position. His retirement is what he has earned. Lets move on to finding our next Chief of Police …. and hope for the best we can get. We have many dedicated and honorable Officers, they deserve our support!
Chief Perry has a socialist mentality. He is a fervent enemy to our 2nd amendment rights. In fact it is because of him that we are the only county in the state of Hawaii where citizens must get a permit (or as I like to say “a permission slip”) from the police Dept before we can even get our hands on pepper spray! Other counties can just go ahead and buy. We have states that citizens can carry firearms while we on Kauai need permission from our Chief to get pepper spray. Perry is also still in the closet with his sexuality and needs to just come out already. Why hide?
