MAHAULEPU — The dirt road to Maha’ulepu reopened Wednesday after months of being closed due to road work and impacts from the April floods.
Grove Farm, the owners of the road, closed the gate they maintain in early January in order to grade the dirt road and fill the large potholes that made the road difficult to drive.
Fishermen have had access to the beach the entire time due to a state law that requires access for that purpose, but it has been closed for public access.
It was set to reopen Feb. 16, but a series of brown water advisories and weather have caused the road to remain closed.
Grove Farm officials say rains in April created the potential for potholes to get bigger, and they had to wait until the road dried out before again allowing access.
The project completed on Feb 16 covered two miles of the road and came with a price tag of $60,000 and provided much smoother access to Mahaulepu Beach and Makauwahi Cave Reserve.
Regular hours have resumed for public access, meaning the gate is open seven days a week between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
