KOLOA — Flood insurance policy holders impacted by the recent disaster are getting answers about their claims.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources, National Flood Insurance Program and County of Kauai is helping insured renters, home, and business owners affected by the April 15-16 flooding with an informational session. The first, Monday afternoon at Koloa Neighborhood Center, attracted only a few residents.
EJ Javier of Koloa attended the session to find out when they will receive funds to start getting his family’s home on Waihohonou Road fixed. The same home was flooded during Hurricane Iniki in 1992.
“All of the drywall that was affected by the water, we had to take ‘em out cause they hold the mold in,” Javier said. “We just wanted to know what else we can do and whatever funds we can get.”
The studio of the house, where his daughter stays, was flooded with more than two feet of water that ruined beds, furniture and flooring. Flood insurance covered the dwelling but not its contents.
Fortunately, the family will be getting insurance help, especially after not hearing back from their insurance adjuster for nearly three weeks.
“They gave us some answers and some hope,” Javier said. “It’s pretty good peace of mind that someone is doing our legwork now.”
The Koloa presentation was delayed due to the low turnout, but this gave individuals time to discuss specific questions with on-site representatives.
Another flood victim who came to the session was Barbara Garcia, who has been living in her home on Wailaau Road since 1977.
“It would be wonderful if they could streamline the process for everybody,” Garcia said. “I went through four different permitting places, and it’s kind of frustrating.”
Her house got flooded during the recent rains, but she had flood insurance.
Three additional Flood Insurance Program information sessions are scheduled. The next session is today from noon to 4 p.m. at Hanalei Colony Resort.
Another is Wednesday from to 7 p.m. at Anahola Clubhouse. A Thursday session is slated noon to 4 p.m. at Hale Halawai ‘Ohana O Hanalei.
