LIHUE — Catholic Charities of Hawaii is asking the public for donations to assist those who are in need of help due to the flooding on Kauai and volcanic activity on Hawaii Island.
In wake of the natural disasters, Catholic Charities of Hawaii received a $10,000 seed grant from their national organization, Catholic Charities USA, and is asking the public for more donations in order to increase their ability to assist those in need.
“We know that’s not going to go that far because of the devastation on the Big Island and Kauai. Whatever people can contribute will be OK,” said Stella Wong, CCH vice president for programs.
Since the disasters, Wong said Catholic Charities has had people from Maui and other islands inquiring on how they can donate.
Disaster victims will be able to use the money towards housing and other needs associated with the disasters.
“We would also like to help them replace a couch or a bed. It doesn’t have to be for rent subsidy. If they lost a bed, a couch, an oven, a refrigerator, we can help to pay for a new one for them. It’s whatever they need,” Wong said.
For those who need assistance, Wong said they should come into the office on Umi Street in Lihue, above Central Pacific Bank, and speak to an intake specialist.
“We know the other resources on the island and we can help them apply for those. We’ll try to get them the resources they need to apply for everything,” Wong said.
“We started our Kauai offices when Iniki hit,” Wong said.
