May the Fourth be with you in Waimea.
Today, the historic Waimea Theater will present the original “Star Wars” movie as a fundraising event to benefit cancer research and support.
The 1977 science-fiction film written and directed by George Lucas — and later re-titled “Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope” — was the first movie in the original trilogy. The popular film started the beginning of the “Star Wars” franchise and created a nearly cult-like following.
Before the special Waimea showing, “Star Wars” fans will be able to compete in a costume contest and test their sci-fi knowledge with trivia games. Event admission includes beer and wine tastings thanks to donations from Kauai Beer Company and the Wine Shop. Other food and beverages will also be available.
Half of the proceeds from the fundraiser event will go to Envision Kauai, while the other half benefits Relay For Life of Kauai to provide “a new hope” for cancer victims and survivors.
Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society that brings community together to remember loved ones lost, honor cancer survivors and raise money to make a global impact on cancer. The other charity, Envision Kauai, is an independent, nonprofit, human resource organization in Lihue.
Theater attendees can enjoy food, drinks, costume contest and movie trivia from 6 to 8 p.m. before the “Star Wars” film “A New Hope” shows from 8 to 10 p.m.
Cost for the 21-and-older event is $35 in advance or $40 at the door. Admission includes movie screening and beer/wine tasting. Tickets can be purchased at http://teampurplepalooza.myevent.com.
