LIHUE — Students are getting the chance to perform a concert with a bonafide music star.
Kauai High School’s Music Department presents “Music with the Stars” tonight featuring student performances with Chorus, Jazz Raiders Ensemble, Ukulele Band, Concert Band, and special guest musician, Dr. Glen Medeiros, who graduated from the school in 1988.
Medeiros found stardom as vocalist for the hit song, “Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love for You.” He toured as a singer from 1987 to 1993 in about 40 countries and sold more than 7 million albums with Polygram and MCA records. He moved from Kauai in 1994 to go to college in Oahu.
“After attaining a BA in History/Humanities, I worked as a teacher in both public and private schools while earning a MA Ed in Elementary Education,” Medeiros said. “After becoming a vice principal, I went back to school again to earn a doctorate in Educational Leadership, graduating in 2014.”
He now serves as president at Hawaii’s oldest Catholic school, Saint Louis School in Honolulu, a K-12 learning institution that has been around for 172 years.
“As a member of the Kauai High School’s Class of 1988, this is the first time I’ve returned to take part in a KHS event in 30 years,” Medeiros said. “While in high school, our former band teacher, Larry McIntosh, encouraged me to sing with the high school band whenever possible.”
Medeiros thoroughly enjoyed those moments and grew as a performer because of the early musical experiences, which included performances in Washington, D. C. and elsewhere.
“I have very fond memories of Kauai High School, my teachers, and my classmates,” Medeiros said. “It will be an honor to return to Kauai and perform with the current members of KHS band. I hope to be able to meet some of my classmates and former teachers there too.”
This year, the Kauai High School Music Department Spring Concert will feature a variety of music ranging from a march by John Philip Sousa to music by Henry Mancini, in addition to Medeiros’ pop hit “Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love for You.”
“One of the things we will be highlighting is the music of Leonard Bernstein, who would have turned 100 this year,” said Kauai High School music teacher, Nina Saraos, who graduated from the school in 1988 as well. “We are also very happy to have Dr. Glen Medeiros, Kauai High School alumnus, featured in our program. He will be performing with each of the ensembles on Friday evening.”
Come and enjoy the free musical event at Kauai Marriott main ballroom on Friday, May 4 with a special silent auction. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the concert begins at 7 p.m.
