Take an adventure tour to Niihau and Lehua while raising funds to preserve Kauai’s history.
The seven-hour cruise with Holo Holo Charters on this May 19 fundraising tour is donating half of the proceeds to Kauai Historical Society. It will include guest speakers, music and snorkeling at the Lehua Crater.
“This is an educational tour, which will focus on the geology, history and cultural aspects of the people and the land,” said Joe Meboe, a member of the 2018 KHS board of directors.
Chuck Blay, Kauai geologist and co-author of “Kauai’s Geologic History,” will detail Niihau and Lehua’s volcanic origins, crater location, and its physical influences on the Na Pali Coast formation. His book and knowledge deals specifically with the island’s geology, describing places such as the Waimea Canyon, Na Pali and Mahaulepu.
Another expert speaker will be Mama Lou Koerte. The teacher of K-2 at Ke Kula Niihau O Kekaha Public Charter School has close ties to Niihau, perpetuating its culture and language with Kauai-based students. She will talk story about Niihau shell lei-making, along with many stories of growing up on Niihau Island.
Lopaka Bukoski, who attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo and taught at Kamehameha Schools, will also speak on Niihau history and culture from a kane perspective.
Mark Rossi will share his musical gifts after studying the Niihau tradition under his kumu, Malaki Kanahele.
