Kuhio Highway near Hanalei Bridge has been cleared and both lanes are now open. The bridge was temporarily closed when a trucked overturned and blocked the road.
A flash flood warning for Kauai has expired, according to the National Weather Service.
A flash flood watch remains in effect for the island until at least this afternoon.
Kuhio Highway is closed in the vicinity of Ha‘ena Beach Park and the Dry Cave due to rushing waters. The Kaua‘i Police Department are advising motorists to avoid the area.
Other road closures:
• Kuhio Highway at the Wailua River Bridge will have temporary lane closures nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., until Saturday morning in order to remove debris from the river. Hawaii Department of Transportation reports this will not be a continuous closure. All traffic will be routed onto the Bryan Baptiste Memorial (Makai) Bridge, where one lane in each direction of traffic will be maintained.
• Kuhio Highway, between Waikoko and Wainiha, remains closed due to multiple landslides. Crews are working with contractors to clear out thousands of pounds of mud, trees, and debris. A definitive timeframe has not yet been established.
• Lei O Papa Road in Princeville remains closed due to a sinkhole.
• Weke Road in the vicinity of Black Pot Beach remains closed.
• HDOT continues to inspect bridges in the flood-affected areas on Kauai. All inspected bridges were deemed safe by HDOT.
Hanalei resident Gayla Spencer says neighbors are busy cleaning waterlogged homes. Spencer says material things can be replaced. She’s more upset that a landslide covered a local cemetery.
Meteorologist Ian Morrison says Wainiha saw moderate rain Thursday night — 2.5 inches (6.35 centimeters) over a 12-hour period. Nearby Hanalei saw 28.1 inches (71 centimeters) of rainfall between 2 a.m. Saturday and 2 a.m. Sunday.
Nearly 500 people have been airlifted from flooded areas since Monday.
