The Waimea Menehune softball team took both ends of a doubleheader make-up match Monday against the Kauai High School Red Raiders at the Waimea Canyon Park.
Tiara Abreu sparked the Waimea bats that picked up 11 hits to score their 14-2 win over the Red Raiders in the opener that was called on the 10-run ruling in the sixth inning when Waimea drove in eight runs on seven hits, including a pair of doubles from Abreu and Cheyla Goias-Soares.
Abreu marked two RBI with her double to lead the Menehune bats. Following Goias-Soares’ two-bagger, Leiko Yamauchi was 3-for-4 with singles, Starlynn Ripley and Jenessa Freitas marked a pair of singles, and Pomai Campos-Banasihan and Maegan Soares each singled.
Dreanalyn Tafiti suffered the loss on the mound, striking out three Menehune and walking six.
Cheyla Goias-Soares picked up the win for Waimea, going the distance and giving up five hits with one run earned, and striking out five Raiders, walking four and hitting two batters.
Justice Funamura-Sasil scored both runs for Kauai, the first in the opening frame when she scored on a bases-loaded walk to Lyla Samson, and the second coming in the fifth inning on a RBI double by Tafiti, her only hit in the game.
Following Tafiti, Kyra Hirokane was perfect 3-for-3 with singles, and Funamura-Sasil got first base in the opening inning with a single.
Funamura-Sasil took the mound for Game 2 and suffered the loss, 13-2, when Waimea picked up nine hits. She struck out a Menehune, walked five, and hit two Menehune batters.
Cheyla Goias-Soares continued her tenure on the mound, picking up the win after giving up five hits, including a solo homerun by Hirokane in the third inning, striking out a Raider, and walking three.
Abreu led the Menehune bats with a triple in the third frame and drove in two Menehune runners. Starlynn Ripley was 3-for-5 with singles with one runner scoring, K. Henderson doubled and singled with a pair of RBI, Freitas marked a single with two RBI, Yamauchi had an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Cheyla Goias-Soares singled, Campos-Banasihan singled, and Cerriah Perreira singled to round out the Waimea hitting.
Following Hirokane’s home run, Cody Lagazo had a pair of singles. Funamura-Sasil and Keiley Albarado-Planas each singled.
Waimea next hosts Kapaa High School in a single game, Wednesday starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Waimea Canyon Park.
Kauai will travel to Kapaa High School on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m.
