LIHUE — Hanamaulu resident Clint Yago Sr. has filed papers to run for mayor of Kauai. For the past 38 years, Yago said he has worked in construction. He graduated with a certificate in carpentry from Kauai Community College.

He said he wants to focus on traffic, homeless and police issues.

Yago says there aren’t enough roads on Kauai, which causes congestion, mornings and afternoon.

“The problems I’m referencing to is coming Kapaa (on) Kuhio Highway, going to Lihue,” he said. “It’s congested during the afternoon hours.”

“I hope to get this problem fixed as soon as possible,” Yago said.

He said he’ll accomplish this by asking the governor for funding to build highways.

Yago said he’d like to see more homeless shelters built. “I propose that shelters be located on old county lots or buildings that are no longer in use.” The shelters would be built by contractors willing to donate their time and money.

Yago said he would help the homeless by seeking them out and going to homeless camps. His goal is to ensure they won’t go back to homelessness.

“We can and will give a chance for each person to help themselves by using programs and through job-hunting,” Yago said.

As mayor, he would work on finding new police recruits at job fairs.

“I will also raise property taxes except for hotels to pay for recruits.”
