Prom dispute resolved, story overblown
Regarding your article about the Kauai High prom dress code.
Student government and PTSA welcomed my peers into their meeting and only about two out of 400 people who signed that petition showed up to voice their opinion. In addition, the petition is public and can be signed by anyone who has access to the internet, making it invalid toward just Kauai High School. They also mention in the petition that Kauai High is the only school with these rules, which is false as we have looked at all of Kauai’s public school’s prom agreement along with outer islands and they either have the same rules or even stricter rules.
During the meeting on Thursday, a girl who signed the petition showed our SAC the dress which she thought did not pass the code, but as the SAC took a look, she approved the dress.
Along with this, I am a female student at Kauai High School along with being apart of many clubs and student government. I have heard and seen all the conversations that went along with this topic and have seen some dresses the girls wanted to wear, I simply told them to see our SAC and when they did, their dress was approved.
I agree with student voice, but when my peers were given a chance to speak out like they have been doing on social media, they did not show up to that meeting which is unacceptable as some were even cyberbullying some teachers and admin who supported the prom dress code.
Prom is a school function and a privilege for our students to have fun and attend. Just like any other school function we had in the past, there are rules students have to follow as they are representing our school to the public and also toward a business as we are lucky to have Koloa Landing host us.
From what I have seen, there are a hundred of dresses to choose from online and in store. Kauai High has been recently incorporating many new school activities from a homecoming dance to many lunchtime activities leadership and student government put on for the entertainment and learning experience of our students. Lastly, I believe that some students did not respect our SAC, admin, and teachers as they have spoken out too harshly.
