LIHUE — Kauai Interscholastic Federation athletes opened their track season by trying for qualifications to the Hawaii High School Athletic Association state meet Thursday evening under windy conditions at the Vidinha Stadium.
KIF athletes pulled off qualification achievements in the field events when Kauai High School’s Taegan Keep handily beat the HHSAA standard of 99 feet, 8 inches by tossing the discus 125 feet, 9.5 inches.
That accomplishment led the list of achievements earned by primarily athletes from Kauai High School where Torrie Hasegawa nailed the Girls Triple Jump on a leap of 32-11, nearly three inches past the HHSAA 32-8.5. Hasegawa also surpassed the HHSAA mark by a quarter-inch after jumping to a second finish at 15.8.
That performance was edged out by Wailea Edwards who topped the Girls Long Jump at 15-09, an inch farther than Hasegawa’s leap and better than the HHSAA mark. Edwards finished second in the Girls Triple Jump (32.08), falling short of the 32.8.5 standard.
Kauai’s Mark Tabalbag was the sole male athlete to make a qualifying statement in the Boys High Jump after clearing the 5-10 standard.
The KIF Qualifying track meet continues Thursday at Vidinha Stadium starting at 4:30 p.m.
