PUHI — The Kapaa High School girls went 5-0 and the Island School boys were 3-2 over the Warrior men Saturday when the Kauai Interscholastic Federation opened its 2018 tennis season, hosted by Island School at the Kauai Community College courts.
Kapaa’s Isabella Kotsol, playing first singles, downed Island School’s Lapis Dove 6-1, 6-0 to set an early indication of the Warrior wahine’s control on its courts. Danica Gibson defeated the Voyagers’ Emma Thain 6-1, 6-4 in second singles.
Kapaa kept up the winning ways as the duo of Sydney Nice and Malia Searby defeated Voyager pair Bonnie Lee and Paulina Do, 6-0, 6-3.
Girls second doubles went to Kapaa’s Wailana Makepa and Hannah Doiyode, who downed the Island School duo of Lily Reynolds and Gianna Detrolio, 6-0, 6-1. Kapaa girls took the girls third doubles by default.
Boys’ action was a bit tighter, with Kapaa’s Mason Buick downing Island School’s Jan Englhard, 6-3, 6-4, in first singles. Warrior Glenn Aguada got past Island School’s Kaikea Kaui, 7-6 (4), and 6-3, in second singles.
Island School, coached by John Crouse and Ernie Blachowiak, rebounded to claim all three matches in boys doubles, led by the Voyager duo of Noah Howard and Adrian Meier controlling Kapaa’s Cody Andrews and Skyler Wilson, 6-2, 6-1, and Island School’s Patrick McKenna and Andrew Scalfani defeating Kapaa’s Gavin Perez and Kaimani Dryer, 6-2, 6-1 in second doubles. The Voyagers took the go-ahead in third doubles by default.
Earlier in the day, Waimea High School also hosted Kauai at its school courts. No results from that competition were available at press time. Island School will host Waimea Saturday at KCC at 1 p.m. Kauai High hosts Kapaa at the Timbers Kauai at Hokuala courts at 9 a.m.
