WAINIHA — A section of Kuhio Highway on the North Shore blocked by a landslide since Friday is expected to be reopened to two-way traffic later today.
WAINIHA — A section of Kuhio Highway on the North Shore blocked by a landslide since Friday is expected to be reopened to two-way traffic later today.
State Department of Transportation Kauai District Highways Division staff have worked continuously since early Friday to clearmud and rock debris from landslides caused by heavy rains on Kuhio Highway between Wainiha and Lumahai.
An emergency access route on the makai (ocean) side of the highway was cleared to allow emergency services access to thecommunities on the other side of the landslide Friday night. This route remained clear to alternating traffic on a limited basistoday.
Work remaining includes clearing of mud and rocks from the landslides, washing down the road, and mitigation work toreduce the likelihood of another landslide cutting off the road.
The state anticipates the remaining work will be completed and the road reopened to two-way traffic this evening.
