LIHUE — Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and Nina Turner, president of Our Revolution, traveled across Hawaii this past weekend to promote citizen engagement, grassroots organizing, and efforts to reform and strengthen democracy and the Democratic Party.
They responded to questions from the audience and encouraged residents in each county to stay involved in local issues, testify and share their stories, volunteer or run for elected office, and become agents of change for equality and justice for all.
The four events on Kauai, Oahu, Hawaii Island and Maui were sponsored by the Democratic Party of Hawaii. Nina Turner spoke about her work to reform the Democratic National Committee as a member of the Unity Reform Commission, including getting rid of superdelegates, incentivizing open primaries and same-day registration for more accessible elections, and financial transparency.
They also discussed “Medicare for All,” water rights, protecting the environment, criminal justice reform, and many other issues that affect the people of Hawaii and this country.
On visiting Hawaii for the first time, Nina Turner said, “It was a spiritual experience for me to be in Hawaii this weekend, welcomed with the aloha spirit on each island, and meeting with so many people who are eager for reform and passionate about being agents of change for all people and our planet.”
Turner said she listened to people from all walks of life share their stories and tell her how they believe it is their kuleana to do what’s pono, and “that’s why they are working to be a part of this revolution, unifying around issues, and organizing to build a transformative grassroots movement to advance the public interest and revitalize our democracy.”
Gabbard, who has long called for reform to the DNC, said, “People want leaders who are focused on their interests and well-being and protecting our planet. We must reform this rigged system that serves corporate special interests and the most powerful into a system that empowers and serves the people and is fair and just for all. I’m grateful to Senator Nina Turner for visiting our wonderful home state and for the work she is doing as an agent of change to unrig this system. By bringing people together in the spirit of aloha, treating others with respect and love, we can bring about real reforms and positive change for the betterment of the people and our planet.”
What Happened Koolaid served at all Events!
Gabbard, could you brief the American People on the FISA warrants used to get surveillance on the Trump team? Wasn’t it based on Salacious information (James Comey)! Paid for by Hillary and the DNC?
I am so relieved that Tulsi is not a corporatist. I follow her votes closely on both govtrack.us and countable and I cannot remember a single one that I do not agree with.
The rest of the Hawaii Congressional Delegation though appears to be bought and paid for.
I am happy that Hanabusa is running for governor so I can vote against her.
Both Schatz and Hirono voted to approve a Republican to the 9th circuit court of appeals. When we watch how the corporate oligarchs exercise such absolute control over the Republican Party, it should be obvious that even if one “used to be” and honorable Republican,, they will lose that title very, very quickly.
And Hirono’s disingenuous defense of her super delegate voter for Hillary Clinton at the Democratic Convention, where she tried to conflate that vote with the Electoral College, when 70% of Hawaii Democrats voted for Sanders in the primary shows the corruption of the Democratic Party of Hawaii.
I will not vote for a corporatist, so Schatz and Hirono are not going to receive my vote. If that means a Republican wins, at least that Republican is an “honest” enemy, not one who promises to support me and then stabs me in the back.
Tulsi was absolutely right when she said the DPH and the DNC need to start listening to their base since it is melting away.
Ahhh…Zwiebel….who cares who you’d vote for? There’s lots of other crazy socialists here besides you. Capitalism has brought us the highest standard of living in the world and you denounce it. Go back to Venusela and bring some toilet paper with you. They really need it.
Strengthening democracy and strengthening the Democratic party are mutually exclusive.
