One of the standout books in this category is Frank E. Peretti’s “This Present Darkness.” It has been a strong seller in general fiction since 1986. We find it to be a very well-written book. The engaging writing style, the character development, the strong themes, and the multi-layered storytelling has made this a most impressive work of fiction! In many ways, the story concept itself tackles a rather timeless issue!
In the vein and quality of many of the popular best-selling writers, Peretti’s “This Present Darkness” captivates us right from the start.
In the small town of Ashton, there are strange things afoot as an unusual group comes into the area, inviting people to join their spiritual movement. This catches the attention of a local reporter (and natural-born skeptic) as well as the local priest, who both begin to uncover a darker motive behind this group’s purpose.
What makes this book so very interesting is at the same time, there are two other conflicts occurring… one on the angelic spiritual level, and the other in the demonic realm. These two forces are at battle with each other, and their actions cross over and manifest into the physical everyday human world of Ashton! Peretti’s imagery is fantastic, and his story’s pacing immediately draws us in to wanting to find out what happens next.
Surprise! When you finish this amazing book, there is a wonderful sequel that Mr. Peretti wrote that continues in the town of Ashton, making it a bit of an epic!
So whether you are religious or not, “This Present Darkness” is a read that you will never forget!
