LIHUE — At Wednesday’s County Council committee meeting, a briefing on the status of the Lopaka Paipa Boulevard connector road to Ala Kalankaumaka, via the Koloa Estates Subdivision, was heard.
The council, said Chair Mel Rapozo, had received some concerns from the community regarding the issue, which was a subdivision issue that hadn’t been completed yet.
“In March 1998, Kukuiula Development Company requested to defer construction of the roadway between Lopaka Paipa Boulevard to the western bypass road, because it wasn’t developed at that time and deferred until the area was further developed,” said Michael Tresler, county Department of Public Works administrator.
In July, the DPW sent correspondence to KDC, presenting their obligation to complete the portion of the road, he said.
In response, the department received a letter from KDC saying it would comply and complete the road.
Since the original plan for the road connection is so old, Rapozo asked if it’s still necessary.
“If the connectivity serves no benefit, and I’m not here to try and get Alexander & Baldwin or Kukuiula out of a commitment, because this is not a cheap doing, this thing is going to cost a lot of money and I’m not here to save them money, but the reality is, 20 years later, is there a reality to making it happen?” Rapozo said. “Or is it going to increase problems on that street?”
Tresler said the conditions that existed at that time still exist and are even more exacerbated due to the increase of traffic in the area.
