LIHUE — The father of a 12-year-old girl who was the victim of a hit-and-run Thursday in Hanamaulu said his daughter has a brain injury and a fractured jaw. She’ll need surgery, but is too weak to undergo the procedure and is still in intensive care at Queens Medical Center on Oahu.
“She is talking when the doctor asks her to,” Raymondo Sabay said. “Some words you can understand, others you cannot. Short words I can understand, like papa, OK, yes and no.”
He and his wife aren’t doing so well he said, but they are staying strong for their daughter.
The accident happened early Thursday morning as Arayza Sabay left her home and walked to her bus stop on Laukona Street, just south of the Hoohana Street junction.
According to a preliminary investigation, police say they believe the child was walking along Laukona Street when she was hit by a vehicle. When they arrived, the involved vehicle had left the scene of the accident.
According to Kim Tamaoka, spokesperson for the County of Kauai, police have no significant updates on the investigation into the accident and are continuing to search for the involved vehicle.
Arayza Sabay attends Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School.
Raymondo and his wife Ma June Sabay have been by their daughter’s side since the accident last week, first in the emergency room at Wilcox Medical Center and then on Oahu.
“You cannot imagine what it was like to see my daughter when we arrived at the emergency room in Lihue after the accident,” Raymondo Sabay said.

This kind of activities will continue to happen until the community takes action. Everyone should be installing cameras to watch the homes and streets in your neighborhoods. Ring is super cheap. Your house costs 5-600k I think couple hundred dollars is worth keeping your neighborhood safe! Then when you catch this scrubs, ice dealers and pedophiles you know what to do!
Why is it that people and witnesses are saying that the County Garbage truck is who hit this child? Is this a coverup? The Sabay Family and the public deserve to know the truth.
When is garbage day for that street? Can anyone who lives there pls verify what time the trash gets picked up?
Thursday early a.m.
Every Thursdays anytime in the mornings but that day I heard it while I was getting up at about 6:30a-7a
WS56, on the day that the accident happened the county reported a delay in trash pickup in Hanamaulu. Check the County of Kauai’s Facebook page, it will verify what I am saying. Where I live the trash pickup is usually before 7am-way before kids walking or leaving for school. But with a delayed rubbish pickup the time the truck is making its rounds is the same time that kids are heading out to the bus for school.
