While most people look forward each year to the merriment and cheer of the holiday season, there are far too many residents who have their hands more than full simply trying to make ends meet on a daily basis.
From now through Christmas Eve, Saturday, Dec. 24, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size. Funds raised are distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make their simple dreams come true.
Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted. Gift certificates and used or new items, while appreciated, should not be submitted.
Checks should be written to Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation 501(c)3. Donations are tax-deductible, and should be mailed to Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, c/o Joy Miura Koerte, P.O. Box 3996, Lihu’e, HI 96766.
Mr. Aloha needs help to buy basic needs
Mr. Aloha has been homeless for more than 10 years. He lives in a remote part of the island, and has been able to survive by receiving food stamps and selling seashells. Although he suffers from depression, he has been denied financial assistance.
Mr. Aloha is able to buy propane, personal hygiene and toiletry items with the little money he earns selling seashells, but still he is happy and self-sufficient. He even lives up to his name by helping others who are homeless and need help and guidance. Although he is able to live within his means, he has difficulty eating solid foods because he has had severe dental problems and needs to have his teeth extracted. He has worked out a payment plan with a dentist, but this will leave him very little for his basic needs. A certificate for Wal-Mart would be helpful so he can purchase propane and other items while he completes his dental payments.
Toys and school clothes are all couple asks
Jennifer and Ben are parents of two elementary-school-aged children. Brian is 7 and Julie is 6. The family has just recently moved into a new rental unit, and had to spend most of their money on utility deposits and various other expenses to get settled in their new home. Both Jennifer and Ben have just started new jobs, and have not had a chance to save for the holidays. They would really appreciate some toys and school clothes to help their children have a joyous holiday season.
James needs groceries or clothing
James, 89, lives alone at an elderly-housing complex.
He gets by on a very small amount of Social Security income that he receives monthly.
He has no other financial resources.
He spends most of his days sitting alone, occasionally visiting with his neighbors.
James is physically frail due to a history of falling, which has been a constant setback for him. A gift to help buy groceries or clothing would help brighten the holidays for this senior.
