MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (AP) — Muggles are giving it their best shot at the game of wizards: Quidditch.
Middlebury College hosted a Quidditch festival on Saturday that celebrates the wizarding sport from the pages of the Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling.
“It’s one of the only coed sports out there where guys, girls, kind of compete all at once together. It doesn’t matter. You’re all just players on the field,” Middlebury Quidditch player Ian Scura said. “That kind of opens up that welcoming environment for everyone.”
All told, a dozen teams from around New England were participating. Saturday’s event included bands, food trucks, vendors — and even “potion” demonstrations
The big difference in muggle Quidditch is that the players don’t fly on brooms. They play on a turf field.
Harry Potter fans have found a way to bring down to earth the game featuring chasers, beaters, keepers and seekers competing for points — and the golden snitch.
Middlebury was the birthplace of the sport 11 years ago. Since then, it spread across the Northeast, and then across the country. There’s even “Major League Quidditch.”
