DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Juwan Carter threw for 230 yards and four touchdowns and Marcus Taylor rushed for 132 yards and two scores as Norfolk State held off a late charge to beat North Carolina Central 28-21 on Saturday.
Carter hit C.J. Jones, Isaiah Winstead and Taylor to give Norfolk State (3-4, 3-1 MEAC) a 21-0 halftime lead.
North Carolina Central had won 18 straight conference games before falling to the Spartans.
NCCU (5-2, 3-1), the defending conference champ, closed to 21-14 when Naiil Ramadan hit Josh McCoy on a 23-yard strike early in the fourth quarter. Carter answered with a 58-yard bomb to Taylor and Ramadan and McCoy combined again to trail 28-21 with 6:12 left.
Ramadan was intercepted twice to stop late drives. Kyle Archie stole the first to stop a 10-play, 39-yard drive. Anthony Smith thwarted the last drive, picking off Ramadan at NSU’s 36.
