BERLIN (AP) — Prosecutors in Germany’s eastern state of Saxony have formally indicted prominent nationalist leader Frauke Petry in connection with a perjury probe.
The dpa news agency reported Wednesday that Dresden prosecutors accuse Petry of lying under oath when she testified before Saxony’s regional assembly in November 2015 about loans to the right-wing Alternative for Germany party.
Lawmakers in Saxony lifted Petry’s immunity in August. The 42-year-old welcomed the decision at the time, saying it would give her a chance to defend herself in court.
Petry, one of 94 AfD candidates elected to the national Parliament last month, has since quit the party.
She cited months of in-fighting among its leadership, saying AfD wasn’t in a position to push for the political change that she thought Germany needed.
