LIHUE — One in five students in the United States is unsupervised after the school day ends, according to a recent survey by the Hawaii Afterschool Alliance.
The alliance is working to connect individuals and organizations to create a statewide system of after-school and out-of-school-time programs that support student success.
Organizations like After-School All-Stars, YMCA and Boys and Girls Club will join the national alliance in this year’s “Lights On Afterschool,” a nationwide series of events celebrating and supporting after-school programs for youth.
“In Kauai there is a huge need not only of more after-school programs but also of summer learning opportunities,” said Paula Adams, Hawaii Afterschool Alliance executive director.
Adams said they are hearing from Kauai parents saying that their children are wait-listed in after-school programs. “They desperately need a place for the kids to go during the after-school hours so they can work,” she said.
On Kauai, Kapaa Boys & Girls Clubhouse will be hosting the second Trunk or Treat on Oct. 26 to help keep lights on after school.
“The event is about having a safe, structured activity where kids can have fun with their families and neighbors,” said Tina Albao, Boys & Girls Club Kauai director of operations and development.
The Wilcox Elementary School A+ Program will also be offering after-school programs on Kauai throughout the year.
“Afterschool not only helps students to succeed in school but also helps families, giving them peace of mind knowing that their children are in a safe and engaging place while school is out,” Adams said.
Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide rally for after-school programs. More than 8,000 events are expected to take place this year across the country and at U.S. military bases worldwide.
Hawaii is kicking off this year’s Lights On Afterschool nationwide today with a celebration at the State Capitol rotunda.
