INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A Republican who’s pumped $800,000 of his own money into his U.S. Senate campaign says he’s resigning from his seat in the Indiana Legislature.
State Rep. Mike Braun of Jasper announced his decision Friday. He says in a statement he’ll miss working in the Indiana House, but hopes to continue serving Hoosiers in a different capacity.
Braun is little known outside the southwestern Indiana district he’s represented the past three years. He owns the Meyer Distributing auto supply business.
Braun is presenting himself as an alternative to Republican U.S. Reps. Todd Rokita and Luke Messer, who’ve been engaged in a bitter feud for the GOP nomination. They are hoping to defeat Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly in the 2018 election.
Braun’s resignation from the Legislature is effective Nov. 1.
