HONOLULU — Waimea High School’s varsity girls volleyball team lost to No. 4 Nanakuli in the quarterfinals of the New City Nissan Girls Volleyball Championships-Division II state tournament Thursday at Saint Francis School in Honolulu.
The Menehune girls fell to the Golden Hawks, of the Oahu Interscholastic Association, in a five-set nail-biter — 25-23, 21-25, 25-13, 25-27 and 13-15.

In the opening round Wednesday night, Waimea defeated Hana of the Maui Interscholastic League, 3-1, at Saint Francis School — 25-18, 23-25, 25-12 and 25-18.
Menehune junior outside hitter Gabrielle Peleras totaled 18 kills and 17 digs. Junior outside hitter Daysha Nelmida-Rice got 12 kills, six assists and 14 digs. Menehune junior setter Leiko Yamauchi totaled 44 assists and eight digs.
Dragons junior outside hitter Nohokula Lind led Hana with 14 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Kanehe Roback and junior outside hitter Shya Roback each had seven kills. Junior setter Shaylee Roback had 36 assists.
